This is a small space overlooking a canal in Venice. On a limited budget, the client wanted a flowery, romantic feel with space to entertain family and friends. She also wanted to grow some vegetables and herbs.
Second hand bricks create a casual and permeable hardscape large enough to take trestles to seat up to twenty, while a small water feature provides a soothing background ambience. Thyme planted between the bricks provides a soft look, and scents the air as it is walked on.
The planting is confined to the borders of the space but is colorful and exuberant. A brick built raised bed for the vegetables and herbs is positioned next to the door to the house for convenience for the kitchen.
